Martha Small Believes That if You Have a Dream, You Should Always Go For It

Martha Small vividly remembers the postcards she received as a young girl at summer camp over the years. They came from her grandmother, collected during her many travels. Rich with images of world landmarks and exotic locales, those cards brought even more to Martha than the warm and loving affection of their sender. They opened a window to the world for this Austin native, generating a curiosity about different lands, people and cultures that remains very strong to this day. But those postcards also passed on several very important messages: Don’t let life pass you by. Reach for your dreams. If an opportunity comes your way, go for it!

A Lasting Influence

Now over 90 years old, Martha’s grandmother continues to travel the world and share her adventures with her granddaughter. And Martha has followed in her footsteps. She’s been around the globe and back again; she even spent her honeymoon on a photo safari in South Africa, coming within inches of lions, giraffes and elephants. But it isn’t just her grandmother’s love for travel that has been a lasting influence in Martha’s life. Much more important is the courage Martha has gained to pursue her dreams—and to never let anything hold her back in doing so. That philosophy fuels this talented professional’s life and work every single day.

"My grandmother taught me that if an opportunity arises, don't let it pass you by — don't live a life that has you looking back with regrets. Always go for your dreams. Every day I try to help my clients do the same."

— Martha Small

Reaching For Dreams

Being a 4th generation Austinite, there isn’t an area in town where Martha doesn’t feel right at home. A Realtor since 2003, Martha balances her time between navigating Buyers and Sellers through the luxury real estate market and raising two children, Charles born in 2008 and Kate born in 2011. Martha feels compelled to give back to the Austin community, a trait instilled in her by her parents and grandparents. She is heavily involved with Seton Hospitals of Austin, specifically as Chair of the Seton Forum in 2011 and as President of the Elizabeth Ann Seton Board in 2014. She is also a member of the Helping Hand Home Society of Austin. A graduate of Casis Elementary, Martin Junior High and S.F. Austin High School — Martha went on to graduate with a BA in Political Science from TCU. She was married in April 2007 to fellow 4th generation Austinite, James Dyess, CEO of Horizon Bank.
